Born in 1917, his father was an architecte, he became himself an architect in 1939. After various experiences among which graphism, sculpture or painting he discovered in 1956 in New York a new concept based on the collaboration of an artist to the industrial design.

In 1958 he worked for Olivetti and his table ware designed for Alessi is still on their catalog as of today.

In 1981 he created the Memphis Group which remains the most important movement of the 20 th century.

In 1994, the Georges Pompidou Center dedicated a large exhibition to his creations.

Today, his creativity has no limit, from the design of private housing, for the European Community to the creation of porcelain pieces for the Manufacture of Sèvres.

In 1998, Ettore Sottsass has conceived for Edition Limitée a full set of colour full hand thrown ceramic vases and boxes.

From 2000, he consecrated a great part of his time to designing for private houses and creating numerous pieces equally suitable for industrialists as for design houses who explore artisanal manufacturing techniques.

He departed this life on December 31 st 2007 in Milan.
